Star-BulletinA 24-year-old man, shot by Dominic Kealoha at Depot Beach Park on the morning of Kealoha's 13-hour standoff with police in Nanakuli, has been charged with auto theft.
Brandon Abellanosa, with no permanent local address, is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail for allegedly stealing a Honda sedan in Ewa on Tuesday.
He has been arrested six times in the past 12 months for auto theft, according to Lt. Alan Anami. "In addition to Tuesday's case, charges are pending in three other cases."
Abellanosa, shot in the chest by Kealoha, was released from the hospital Feb. 3, said auto-theft Det. Jeffery Bruchal.
"Right after he was released, he was back on the street," Bruchal said. "He didn't keep any of his doctor's appointments and still has the staples (for his wound)."
The latest theft was reported at about noon Tuesday. At 12:20 p.m., police received an anonymous tip that several men were stripping a car on Lahaina Street in Makaha.
Two men in the car fled when they saw the responding officer, who found Abellanosa hiding in an abandoned house, Bruchal said.
The second suspect was still at large this morning.
On the day he was shot on Jan. 27, Abellanosa and two females, ages 21 and 17, left a stolen Honda parked on Haleakala Avenue and went joy riding in another Honda that they had just stolen in Ewa, police said.
Kealoha allegedly stole the parked Honda, leading to a confrontation with Abellanosa at Depot Beach Park. Kealoha stole another car that same day. He was in that second car when police caught up with him, resulting in a standoff at Farrington Highway and Nanakuli Avenue that paralyzed traffic for hours on the Waianae Coast. The standoff ended when Kealoha shot himself.
