George Harrison asks state
court to reconsider
easement decision

WAILUKU -- Attorneys on behalf of former Beatle George Harrison have asked the Hawaii Supreme Court to reconsider its decision upholding the right of people to use an easement across his property in east Maui.

"The very thing he wanted was privacy and security for his family," said William McKeon, an attorney for Harrison.

McKeon noted Harrison is worried about security in light of the recent attack at his estate in England. Harrison has said he did not know there was an easement on the property in Nahiku when he bought it 20 years ago.

Attorneys filed the motion Friday, following the Supreme Court's opinion on Feb. 1.

Pollutant problems noted at Wahiawa

The city is asking the public to be on the alert for someone or something that is causing pollutant problems at the Wahiawa Wastewater Treatment plant.

The plant is conducting 24-hour sampling of incoming sewage to identify the pollutant, which is possibly toxic, and locate where it's being dumped, according to Mayor Jeremy Harris.

The sampling indicates that the dumping may be occurring on Sunday mornings.

Inspections have been increased to detect any sign of illegal dumping into manholes and sewer lines, and investigators are checking discharges from industrial businesses.

Harris noted that there is a penalty of up to $50,000 a day for each day of illegal dumping plus three years in prison.

No fish kills have been observed, but the city will post "precautionary alert" signs to warn against eating any fish from Lake Wilson.

Head-on Waianae crash kills one, injures four

A 30-year-old Aliamanu man was killed and four other persons injured early today in the head-on collision of a van and pickup truck on Farrington Highway at Maipalaoa Road in Maili.

The van driver was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:40 a.m., about an hour after the collision.

The four injured were in the pickup, driven by a 22-year-old Waianae woman. She and a 17-year-old boy seated in the front were listed in stable condition at St. Francis Medical Center-West. A man, 23, and woman, 18, who were riding in back were at Queen's Hospital in guarded and fair condition, respectively.

Vehicular homicide investigator Sgt. David Talon said the van, traveling east on Farrington Highway, crossed into the westbound lane for unknown reasons.

The pickup truck swerved to the left, but was struck by the van after it veered back into the eastbound lane, Talon said. Speed appears to be a contributing factor, he said.

It was the 10th traffic death in 47 days this year on Oahu, the fourth this month.

Woman is critically hurt in Maui auto accident

WAILUKU -- A woman was in critical condition this morning at Maui Memorial Hospital after the car she was riding in struck another vehicle on Kula Highway.

Naty Paz, 79, was a passenger in a car that struck a vehicle stopped in traffic, spun out of control and hit an oncoming vehicle, said Police Sgt. Clarence Kenui.

The driver of the car Paz was in, an 87-year-old woman, was reported in satisfactory condition.

The crash occurred at 10:08 a.m. yesterday at the intersection at Omaopio Road.

Girl, 4, dies of injuries; was trampled by a horse

HILO -- A 4-year-old girl died Friday after she apparently was trampled by a horse at Ookala, north of Hilo, police said.

Chasity Cardoza-Salomon was with her father and two other children in the family when a horse they were trying to move kicked or stepped on her, police said.

Maui newcomer killed; walked off a cliff

WAILUKU -- A New Jersey man who moved to Maui about two weeks ago died this morning after walking off a cliff, Police Sgt. Clarence Kenui Jr. said.

The man was drinking with people at the Pauwela Light House in Haiku when he fell about 2:05 a.m., Kenui said.

Police tentatively classified the death as a miscellaneous accident but are still investigating.

The man's name has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Waikele store employee arrested in $1,500 theft

An employee at the Waikele Bugle Boy outlet was arrested yesterday for allegedly stealing about $1,500 from the store through refunds of items that were never sold.

The woman, 18, was booked for second-degree theft and released pending further investigation.

Bugle Boy conducted its own investigation after records showed the Waikele store had a refund rate five times the national average, police said.

Police were notified after the suspect was identified. The fraudulent refunds were issued between Jan. 12 and Feb. 9.

Police arrest suspect in woman's injury

Second-degree assault charges are pending against a 42-year-old man who allegedly punched his former girlfriend. The woman, 36, suffered a fractured rib.

The suspect allegedly punched the woman after she slapped him for spitting in her face during an argument last Friday at the victim's Waialua Beach Road residence, police said.

Police hunting suspect who let stallion loose

Police are seeking witnesses who may have seen a truck and trailer parked near a Waimanalo lot, adjacent to D.K. Ranch and close to the Olomana Golf Course, on Friday night.

The truck apparently was there prior to the death of a prized stallion. The horse, valued at $75,000, was struck and killed by a vehicle about 9:15 p.m. Friday.

The horse's owner suspects a horse breeder brought a mare to the lot between 8:30 and 9:15 p.m. and left without closing the gate.

Illegal breeding would be classified as theft of service, police said.
