Wahine rally late
to win tourneySoftball tale of two

fingers and a thumbKate Judd's double keyed a two-run game-winning rally as the University of Hawaii softball team beat Texas, 6-5, yesterday for the championship of the Chevron Paradise Classic at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
After one out in the seventh, Mel McGie and Tyree Woodruff both reached on singles aided by misplays by Texas shortstop Jodi Reeves. Judd then lined her double into the left-center gap, scoring McGie.
Joyce Lum followed with a sharp grounder to Reeves. The ball deflected off her glove for an error, and Woodruff scored the winning run.
Woodruff, the tournament MVP, went 4-for-4. She batted .563 in six games for 20th-ranked UH (4-2).
Tiffany Valdehueza put Texas ahead, 5-3, with a bases-loaded triple in the fourth. But freshman Sheri Oronoz relieved Janelle Gonzales and shut down the 19th-ranked Longhorns (5-6).
Hofstra beat top-seed UCLA earlier yesterday, and was to have played the winner of the Hawaii-Texas game for the championship. But the games fell behind schedule and the Lady Dutchmen left to catch their flight to New York.
