A 43-year-old pedestrian struck by three cars while crossing Moanalua Freeway late Friday night is in fair condition at Tripler Hospital. He suffered a broken pelvis and broken legs.

The victim, John P. Doyle, had been living at a Kalihi care home until last September.

The facility's owner said Doyle, a veteran, suffered from schizophrenia. He has no family in Hawaii, she said.

The first driver to hit Doyle turned himself in at the Pearl City police station Saturday morning, and was arrested, but was released pending further investigation. He was driving a Mazda RX7.

Two other drivers failed to stop, police said.

Army Staff Sgt. David DuBois, a military police officer, stopped when he thought he saw a dead body in the fast lane heading Ewa near the Puuloa Road Overpass about 11:30 p.m. While he waited for a break in traffic, he witnessed Doyle's legs being run over by two other cars. DuBois ran across three lanes of traffic to reach Doyle. When he got to him, he heard him moan and saw that the left leg was noticeably broken.

Dubois dragged Doyle as close to the concrete median barrier as he could and flagged down a motorist to call 911.

Police Sgt. Bart Canada said, "If the drivers stopped and rendered aid, we probably wouldn't pursue any charges. It would have just been the pedestrian's fault for crossing the freeway. Anytime we have to pursue prosecution, we ask for maximum penalties."
