Legislature 2000

Reform Party seeks
entry on state ballots

Don't take us for granted, says Johnny "Bang-Bang" Jackson, a former professional boxer, the new chairman of the Hawaii Reform Party.

"I think all of us would be better off with another choice," said Jackson, owner of J&H Research and Consulting.

His first job will be getting the party on the fall ballot and then working on voter drives and finding candidates, Jackson said.

GABBARD MAY RUN:

Congress is calling Mike Gabbard, one of Hawaii's most vocal opponents to same-sex marriage.

The 52-year-old small-business man said he was starting an exploration committee to gauge the support he would have if he challenged incumbent Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D, Hawaii).

He gave no deadline to decide.

"If I find that people want me to do it, then I will," Gabbard said.

If he does run, Gabbard said, he would campaign as a Republican.

HOUSE ON TV:

You can phone them, you can fax them, you can even send them questions via e-mail. To increase communications with the community, the state House has started a Friday afternoon talk show on public access Channel 54.

The show runs live for one hour, starting at 4 p.m. Don't expect the Regis and Kathie Lee show, however: The report from the state House is hosted by Rep. Nestor Garcia and focuses on the top issues of the 2000 Legislature.

The phone number is 586-8173, the fax is 1-800-535-3859, and e-mail may be sent to houseofrep@capitol.hawaii.gov.
