Guard rails to be ready soon on Kalanianaole

By the end of this month, Kalanianaole Highway from Hanauma Bay to Sandy Beach will have better guard rails, and night drivers won't have to detour through Hawaii Kai.

According to Marilyn Kali, spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation, the $6.6 million guard-rail improvement project is running a little behind its Jan. 24 completion date.

The project, contracted to Grace-Pacific, was started last July.

Army Guard's Imai awarded service medal

Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Eugene Imai has been awarded the Distinguished Service Medal for his 31 years of service, the last four as as deputy commanding general for the U.S. Army National Guard in the Pacific.

Imai, whose civilian job is senior vice president for administration at the University of Hawaii, was commander of the Hawaii Army National Guard from 1991-1996, when he was promoted to his current position.

He will be replaced by Brig. Gen. Dennis Kamimura, administrator for the city Motor Vehicle and Licensing Division.

A Vietnam War veteran, Imai served in the Army Reserve here for 20 years, rising to chief of staff at IX Corps, until he joined the Hawaii Army National Guard.

Fire at car lot believed to be deliberately set

Two cars parked at Pacific Nissan's Waipahu lot were damaged in an early morning fire today that was believed to be deliberately set.

Firefighters from the Waipahu station, located next door to the car dealership at 94-119 Farrington Highway, responded at 3:22 a.m. and quickly extinguished the blaze.

Waipahu fire Capt. Roland Harvest said firefighters heard the "popping" sounds of the fire at about the same time a Pacific Nissan security guard had come to the station to report the fire.

The damaged cars were parked at Pacific Nissan's service department in back of the showroom.

Apartment fire begun by neglected candles

Burning candles started an apartment fire yesterday that caused $34,000 in estimated damage to three Manana Gardens units at 959 Luehu St.

Fire Capt. Richard Soo said a 30-year-old man living in a third-floor unit was using candles for lighting after electricity to his unit was turned off.

The 3:18 a.m. fire was started by candles in his bedroom, say investigators.

Damage was estimated at $30,000 to structure and contents of the unit where the fire started. Two other units sustained water damage estimated at $2,000.

Isle woman, 26, sought in theft of oil painting

Police are seeking to arrest a 26-year-old woman indicted last month for the April 1999 theft of "Wind Shift," an original oil painting by Roy Tabora which was stolen from the Diamond Head Gallery in Waikiki.

Tami Middleton, a former employee of the gallery, is believed to be residing on the Big Island in the Kailua-Kona area.

The painting has been located on the mainland.

Anyone with information about Middleton is asked to call Honolulu CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
