One-hitter for Oronoz

Freshman Sheri Oronoz saved the night for the Hawaii women's softball team while nationally top-ranked UCLA and No. 15 Long Beach State each won two games in the Chevron Paradise Classic.

Oronoz held Texas Tech to one hit - a one-out single by Tiffany Harrington in the fifth inning - as the 20th-ranked Wahine trimmed the Red Raiders, 6-0, last night for a split of their doubleheader.

Earlier, UH was held to two hits by Texas' Charla Moore in a 4-1 loss to No. 19 Texas.

In the finale of yesterday's six-game tourney slate, UH right fielder Tyree Woodruff backed Oronoz's mound heroics by going 4-for-4 at the plate and driving in two runs.

Dana Degen's two-run homer keyed a three-run first inning for the Wahine and Oronoz took it from there. She walked one batter and faced 23 over seven innings.

UCLA downed Hofstra, 6-1, and edged Texas, 5-4, scoring the deciding run in the eighth inning without a hit.

Jennifer Spigner and Jessica Smith homered as Long Beach State beat Hofstra, 6-4. The 49ers also topped Texas Tech, 8-4.
