Little things
By Al Chase
hurt Rainbows
in extra-inning
loss to Dons
Star-BulletinPatrick Scalabrini thought he had the third-base line guarded. He was off by about a foot.
Sean Yamashita thought he had called strike three on a 1-2 pitch. It missed by ever so little.
The San Francisco Dons turned those small advantages in the 11th inning into a 4-3 win over Hawaii in the opener of a three-game series watched by 1,248 fans at Rainbow Stadium last night. They meet again tonight at 6:35.
The Rainbows hurt themselves, missing several scoring opportunities despite rapping out 13 singles.
The disappointment was compounded because it negated a fine pitching performance by left-hander Jamie Aloy, making his first start since last season.
The 6-foot-3 senior pitched nine innings, allowed six hits and two earned runs. He was economical with his 104 pitches, never using more than 15 to finish an inning.
Told last Saturday he was joining the starting rotation, Aloy never even worked on his windup this week, using the stretch position instead.
"His curve didn't work out early so we stayed with the fastball and change-up," catcher Brian Bock said.
Later, Aloy went mostly with the fastball, moving it in and out and changing speeds.
"If I felt he was tiring, I would have taken him out, but he had so many easy innings," Hawaii head coach Les Murakami said.
In the fourth inning with one out and runners at first and second, Kenn Wakakuwa was doubled off first base on a fly out to left field.
"I just had a brain fart. I lost sight of the outfielder," said Wakakuwa, trying to explain why he was almost at second base when the ball was caught.
In the seventh, Nate Jackson drew a leadoff walk.
But when USF starter Ian Perio couldn't come up with Sean Takamori's sacrifice bunt, Jackson was out in a rundown between second and third.
"He said he slipped. If he had kept coming he would have made third," Murakami said.
The Rainbows (2-8) had runners at second and third with one out in the eighth, but USF right-fielder Jason Howard made a diving catch of Rory Pico's shallow fly and pinch hitter Darin Baker grounded out.
Howard, who homered over the right-field wall in the first inning, opened the 11th with a double just inside the third base line.
"I'm supposed to guard the line and I thought I was close enough," Scalabrini said.
After Jesse Foppert sacrificed Howard to third, Yamashita retired Pat Walsh on a fly to right.
But, after not getting the called third strike, Rigo Lopez sent a soft liner to center to score Howard.
"It was supposed to be a fastball away, but it ran in. I didn't want it to, but it happens sometimes," Yamashita said.
Perio, a Castle High School graduate, started for the Dons (4-3) and went 6° innings. He gave up 10 hits including Bock's two-run single in the sixth that put UH ahead briefly, 3-2.
Walsh, a Punahou grad, doubled to center to start the seventh and tied the score at 3-3 on Jared Carvalho's sacrifice fly.
