16 UH athletes
earn conference
academic honors

Sixteen University of Hawaii student-athletes earned All-Western Athletic Conference academic honors for the Fall 1999 semester, the WAC announced this week.

The UH soccer team led the way, with eight players earning the honor, led by sophomore Erin Schremser (3.93 grade point average in General Arts & Sciences). The other booters were Camille Kalama, Megan Lytle, Wanette Miyashiro, Wendy Miyashiro, Leila Wai, Lea Wakabayashi and Liane Watanabe.

Football players Robert Morgan III, Daniel Reed, Dan Robinson and Yaphet Warren also made the honor roll, along with cross-country runners Diane Kohara, Deborah Smuda and Brandi Washington, and volleyball player Veronica Lima.

Athletes must have at least a 3.2 cumulative GPA to be eligible.

Rainbows pad swim lead

At Long Beach, Calif., the Hawaii men's swimming and diving team set five Pacific Collegiate Swim Conference records while building a runaway lead in the conference championship meet yesterday.

The Rainbows finished the third day of competition with 565 points, to 405 for runner-up Cal State Bakersfield.

Louis Rojas (100 butterfly), Nick Folker (200 freestyle), Simon Thirsk (100 backstroke) and freshman Terry Pruitt (100 breaststroke) broke school and conference records. Dave Jenkins, Angus Macdonald, Anders Johnson and Nicholas Larsen set a PCSC mark in the 800 freestyle relay.

UH divers Chris Van Hoose and Eddie Stephens contributed a 1-2 finish in the 3-meter preliminaries.

Outrigger canoe trials set

The Hawaii Trials for OC-1 World Sprints in outrigger canoe paddling will be held Sat., Feb. 27 at Keehi Lagoon.

Check-in is at 8 a.m. The entry fee is $18 if received by Feb. 18, and $25 thereafter.

Former Crusader honored

University of Montana football player Kelley Bryant, who prepped at St. Louis, recently received the Larry Miller Award, which is given to the team's outstanding defensive lineman each year. The senior tackle was a unanimous all-conference pick and a Walter Camp All-American.

Kudos to Wailea Golf Club

The Wailea Golf Club on Maui has captured two national honors and an individual state award.

Wailea received a gold medal from Golf Magazine in its biennial list of the nation's outstanding golf resorts. Wailea also was selected one of the country's top 100 golf shops by the industry publication Golf Shop Operations. And Wailea PGA pro Eddie Lee was named Assistant Pro of the Year by the Aloha Section PGA.

InLine hockey on Maui

The USA Hockey InLine Pacific Regional tournament will be held June 9-11 on Maui, hosted by the Maui Inline League.

Regional winners in each age division (10-and-under through 17-and-under) will be invited to the national championships in early August.

Team entries for the regional will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until two weeks before the competition or until each division is sold out.
