pastor, dies at 80
Star-BulletinThe Rev. Jack Courtney Smith, former pastor of Kahuku United Methodist Church and Ewa Beach United Methodist Church, died Thursday in Durham, N.C.
Smith, 80, was sent to Hawaii in 1959 by the denomination's Board of Home Missions and served as a pastor here for nine years.
While at Kahuku, he coordinated the grass-roots construction of the unique sloped-roof church that still serves the Windward congregation.
In a 1964 interview, Smith called the church "ecumenical from the ground up," the product of workers from Catholic, Presbyterian and Mormon congregations and other neighbors who joined the Methodists in raising the church and education building.
He left Hawaii to serve for three years at the Yuma United Methodist Indian Mission near Yuma, Ariz. He retired in 1986 after assignments at several North Carolina churches.
His ministry was directed toward reaching out to the poor and raising awareness of their needs, according to a family statement.
Services will be tomorrow at McMannen United Methodist Church in Durham. Memorial donations may be made to Durham Interfaith Hospitality Network, 210 E. Trinity Ave., Durham, N.C. 27701.
