Army sergeant to be
arraigned in molestation;
wife also held

An Army sergeant indicted for sexually molesting two girls between January and August 1997 was expected to be arraigned today in U.S. District Court.

A federal grand jury yesterday indicted William George Hayes II, 35, on two counts involving two girls less than 16 years old.

The grand jury also indicted his wife, Janice Hayes, 34, for lying to investigators about her knowledge of the molestations.

The couple are being held without bail after a judge ruled last month that they were a flight risk and a danger to the community.

The indictment charges William Hayes with having oral and anal sex with a girl identified only as C.H., between Jan. 21 and Feb. 20, 1997.

He was also charged with a sexual act involving a girl identified only as C.A., between June 1 to Aug. 31, 1997.

Janice Hayes allegedly lied to investigators that she was never told by one of the victims that her husband had molested her and that she never witnessed her husband molesting the girl.

Janice Hayes' attorney, Lane Takahashi, said he had been notified of the indictment and expects his client to be arraigned on the charge today. The indictments stemmed from an investigation that was triggered by a 16-year-old's accusations that William Hayes, a military policeman, had sexually abused her for half her life.

Hayes was also accused of abusing four other girls. His wife was accused of covering up the offenses.

Janice Hayes allegedly told one of the girls in a letter to "forgive and forget and to move on with her life."

The government has produced as evidence a letter by one of the girls who related that she felt pain during one of the encounters with William Hayes and Janice Hayes looked on and did nothing.
