Charlotte Eaton Faye, a community volunteer and widow of former Amfac President Hans Peter Faye, died Jan. 30 at her Honolulu residence. She was 101.

"She spanned three centuries and she was a delightful woman," said her daughter, Peggy Morgan.

Her mother lived through a gracious time in Honolulu's history, Morgan said. "The ladies of that era did a lot to make Hawaii charming."

Faye was born in Geneva, N.Y.

Her community volunteer work here was typified by her service as co-chairwoman of the Christmas Seal sale committee. She also was active with the Society for Crippled Children and Adults, and the Free Kindergarten Association.

Her husband, who died in 1984, became president of Amfac in 1950. Joining American Factors' San Francisco office in 1919, he transferred to Honolulu in 1934, initially to become vice president and assistant manager.

He belonged to a kamaaina family of sugar planters whose Hawaiian roots began with arrival of Hans Peter Faye Sr. from Norway in 1880.

Returning to Kauai after his term as Amfac president, he became president of Kikiaola Land Co., a family firm that acquired real estate formerly owned by Waimea Sugar Co.

Although her mother fell in love with Hawaii at first sight in 1919, she never forgot her Eastern roots and related dignity, manners and graciousness, Morgan said.

"She was a wonderful mother and a wonderful friend," a happy person who was fun to be with and most generous, Morgan said.

"She made things. She gave things. She was generous with her soul and her heart," she said.

In her last year, she lived with her daughter in Honolulu. Before that, she lived on Kauai in the family manager's home of what is now known Waimea Plantation Cottages, which was developed from former Waimea Sugar Co. property.

Faye also is survived by daughters Dr. Eleanor Faye and Charlotte Sharp; nine grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Waimea United Church of Christ in Waimea, Kauai. A gathering at the grove of Waimea Plantation Cottages will follow the services. Donations may be made to Waimea United Church of Christ Garden and Cemetery Fund.
