Rainbows hurt

Star-BulletinHawaii starting pitcher Rich Snider deserved a better fate last night against the UCLA Bruins.
He didn't get it, but not because his teammates weren't trying.
"Today, I thought we had the right approach. Everybody was up and ready for this game," Hawaii shortstop Patrick Scalabrini said.
But a lack of communication and the failure to execute in the field, coupled with the continuing anemia at the plate, doomed the Rainbows.
The Bruins (2-0) got a run home here, another there, until finally knocking Snider out in the sixth.
The 10-3 UCLA win before 1,304 Rainbow Stadium fans extended UH's losing streak to three games.
Snider's misfortunes started in the first inning.
After walking Garrett Atkins, left fielder Jamie Aloy either got a late start or lost the ball in the lights on Bill Scott's catchable line drive that dropped for a single.
The 'Bows (2-6) then failed to turn a double play and the Bruins' first run scored when Chad Boudon dropped a fly ball in right field.
Third baseman Danny Kimura's fielding error on a potential double play ball led to a UCLA run in the fifth.
When Aloy and center fielder Darin Baker failed to communicate on Chase Utely's high fly to left-center field, Aloy was charged with a two-base error.
Atkins followed with an RBI single and Scott cleared the bases with his second home run in as many nights.
"That one in left-center field, someone has to call that. Someone has to take charge," UH head coach Les Murakami said. "And the pop up down the third base line, nobody calls again."
Hawaii led, 3-2, after three innings when UCLA's decision to intentionally walk Kimura, loading the bases, backfired briefly.
Shane Chan's grounder went right through first baseman Eric Reese's legs, allowing two Rainbows to score. But the Bruins came back with two runs in the top of the fourth inning to retake the lead.
As in the series opener, Hawaii had opportunities early but left five men on base against UCLA starter Jon Brandt.
For the second consecutive night, UCLA's relief pitchers were outstanding. Last night Bobby Roe allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five in four innings.
Murakami remains confident the Rainbows will be OK once he settles on a set lineup.
"I know the possibilities. Everyone has been given a shot who needed a shot," he said. "After this week, the experimentation is over. Once we play as a unit, we're going to start rolling."
