Smaller better
Star-Bulletin staff
in Wahine winHawaii head coach Vince Goo used a smaller lineup last night to get a better matchup on defense against host Texas-El Paso.
He then challenged the Wahine to stop Amy Pack, UTEP's high-scoring freshman forward, and not let the Miners offense get going in the second half as it did at the Stan Sheriff Center last month.
The UH defenders responded holding Pack to eight points vs. the 24 she scored here and limiting UTEP to a 28 percent shooting percentage from the field.
Hawaii's 65-36 victory kept the Wahine a half game behind first-place Southern Methodist which beat visiting Tulsa, 73-66.
"Stopping Pack was a key for all our players," Goo said. "We wanted a hand in her face at all times and we wanted to defend her penetration to the left."
Pack makes her move to the left 19 out of every 20 times. Yesterday, she managed to penetrate toward the basket just once.
The Wahine used a 2-2-1 trapping defense designed to contain the Miners and give them little time to run an offense.
Offensively, UH relied on its power game throughout, attempting just five 3-pointers.
Raylene Howard hit 10-of-13 field goal attempts and finished with a game-high 25 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds as UH held a 43-25 margin off the boards.
Kylie Galloway scored 14 points and Kyla Evers had 11.
The Wahine play at Fresno State tomorrow night.
