Special to the Star-BulletinWith solid pitching, solid defense and a never-give-up attitude, Iolani defeated Waimea, 9-2, in the Hawaii High School Association state softball tournament last night.
The Raiders took control of the game at the University of Hawaii softball stadium from the start with three runs.
However, in the top of the third, the momentum shifted in Waimea's favor when Erin Castillo, the Menehunes' third batter, hit a line drive, two-run homer.
"It was a very, very close game," said Iolani head coach Chris Shimabukuro. "That one Waimea batter was very good.
"We had control of the game until the momentum shifted with (Castillo's) hit."
Despite its loss of momentum, Iolani regrouped to dominate. In the fourth inning, the Raiders scored another run on a triple by Mitzi Ing, who was 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.
Iolani closed out the game with five more runs in the sixth inning.
"We were in there for the first five innings up until the sixth," Waimea head coach Pat Baniaga said. "When you go up against the No. 1 team, all you can pray for is to hang in there."
"Waimea is a well-coached team and despite what the final score was, it was a much closer game," Shimabukuro said.
The Raiders, who have gone undefeated this season, face Baldwin today at UH's softball stadium.
