Star-BulletinPhilip Avery Sykes, former manager of Keahole Airport in Kona in 1971 as well as airports in Waimea and Upolu Point, died Jan. 31 in Hot Springs Village, Ark.
Sykes assumed command of Pacific Air Forces Base Command and the 326th Air Division at Hickam Air Force Base in 1965.
Before that, he had served as deputy special assistant to the Joint Chiefs of Staff for Arms Control in Washington, D.C.
He was a heavily decorated World War II veteran pilot.
Born in Kalamazoo, Mich., Sykes had a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering and a master's degree in business administration.
Sykes also had served as a member of the board of directors of the Boy Scouts of America in Honolulu.
He is survived by his wife Jane Minor, son Philip Jr., daughter Cathryn Ann, daughter Bonnie Lee Norris, stepson Gary Tegman, stepdaughter Kay Kirkland, stepdaughter Pamela Fancy and 11 grandchildren.
Services with military honors were to today on the mainland.
