Pearl City and Waimea made the most of just one hit apiece to win opening-round games in the Chevron Hawaii High School Athletic Association State Softball Championship yesterday at the University of Hawaii Wahine stadium.

Elishana Piris got Pearl City's only hit off Lahainaluna's Noelani Rickard in the fourth inning and eventually scored on a throwing error. That was the only run Chargers pitcher Loihi McKeague would need in a 2-0 victory.

McKeague held the Lunas to two hits and struck out 10.

For Waimea, Bridget Louis' single - the lone hit off Kalaheo's Lehua Kiaaina - keyed a three-run fifth inning that carried the Menehunes to a 3-2 nod over the Mustangs.

Winning pitcher Albette Nawai weathered eight Kalaheo hits while Kiaaina, who fanned 14 Waimea batters, was the victim of two errors and two passed balls in the fateful fifth.

Also advancing to today's quarterfinals were Kamehameha, which blanked Kailua, 4-0, on a two-hitter by Erin Sing Chow, and Waianae, which downed Kealakehe, 6-2, on Jasmine Choy's three-hitter.

Sing Chow also drove in two runs with a single and groundout for Kamehameha and teammate Courtney Cho was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Jana Pintz had both Kailua hits.

Leilani Kuhaulua stroked two hits and scored three runs to pace Waianae's attack. Ashiela Acosta added two hits, including a run-scoring triple, for the Seariders.

In today's quarterfinals at UH, Waianae plays fourth-seeded Baldwin at 2:30 p.m.; Kamehameha takes on No. 3 Waiakea at 4; Pearl City challenges second-seeded OIA champion Mililani at 5:30 and Waimea goes against No. 1 Iolani, the ILH champ, at 7.
