True bravery isn't really necessary to enjoy the Punahou Carnival, but a balanced inner ear and a strong stomach might help.

The annual fest boasts two new rides this year. The Inverter had its Hawaii debut at the 1999 50th State Fair, but the Cliff Hanger is new to the state. The ride is designed to simulate hang gliding. Popular since it's introduction at mainland carnivals, Cliff Hanger riders often comment that it feels like flying, according to it's Oregon-based manufacturer.

"These are both for the older kids," said Robin Tanaka, carnival secretary.

But the two-day event, which opens tomorrow, also has lots to offer for small children and even stodgy grown-ups. Rides and games for keiki will be featured, along with an extensive carnival midway.

A live auction at 5 p.m. Saturday will include gift certificates from Connie Gayle Beauty Centre, Maui Divers and Sylvan Learning Centers; accommodations at Kapalua Villas, Hilton Santa Fe and Aston Hotels; merchandise from Diamond Gallery, Hawaiian Island Creations and Riches Kahala and a reserved parking spot for next year's carnival.

Other attractions include a gallery of renowned local artists and tents selling produce, plants, clothes, household items and crafts.

Then there's the food.

Malassadas are still just a single script (25 cents) and there will be two tents. Also returning are gyros ($3.25), portuguese bean soup ($1.25 small, $2.50 medium and $4.75 large), and the Hawaiian Plate dinner ($6), among other favorites.

Just remember: Ride first, eat later.
