This year's festival theme is He Makana O Na Lei Nani, or a gift of beautiful lei. "Leis have remained a precious universal gift of aloha," said Lurline Kawainui, president of the 2000 Aloha Festivals.
Martinez has been succeeded by three generations of lei makers to ensure that tradition continues.
Aloha Festivals is a 54-year-old multicultural celebration with events statewide over a two-month period. According to the Aloha Festivals office, more than 1 million people are expected to attend some 300 events beginning in September.

American Dance Festival Hold Auditions: The American Dance Festival will hold auditions for Young Artist Tuition Scholarships at nine sites across the country for students interested in attending the ADF Six Week School from June 8-July 21 on Duke University's campus in Durham, N.C. The audition locations are: Harrison, Va., March 5; Wichita, Kan., March 18; Brockport, N.Y., March 19; Salt Lake City, Utah, March 19; Gainesville, Ga., March 19; New York City, N.Y., March 26; Long Beach, Calif., April 1; and Durham, N.C., April 16.
Each audition consists of an hour-long technique class and a solo no longer than a minute-and-a-half in length.
The scholarships are offered to promising students who have a high level of technical ability and creative potential with experience in performance, choreography or both. Full and partial scholarships are awarded for tuition only.
Students need to send application forms and a $30 application fee to ADF prior to the audition.
Students unable to attend an audition may submit a VHS tape containing two minutes of technique and a 1-1/2 minute solo by April 1.
