Goldstein takes title
in pro tennis tourney

Top-seeded Paul Goldstein of Rockville, Md., defeated Brazil's Andre Sa, 7-5, 6-2, in the final of the first Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger yesterday at the Big Island resort.

Goldstein pocketed $7,200 and 60 ATP Tour ranking points for his first title in a USTA Prudential Circuit Challenger event.

The doubles title, worth $1,820 and 43 rankings points, went to Jim Grabb of Hermosa Beach, Calif., and Richey Reneberg of Atlanta. They got past James Blake of Fairfield, Conn., and Cecil Mamiit of Los Angeles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.

Vulcans down Aztecs

Jacob Ryan's two-run single in the sixth inning broke a 2-2 tie and Hawaii-Hilo went on to a 5-2 baseball victory over San Diego State yesterday at Kailua-Kona.

Brandon Chaves had three hits for the Vulcans (6-6), including a double that launched the deciding rally in the sixth against the Aztecs (2-3).

Pro Bowl golf at Waikoloa

The second annual Pro Bowl Celebrity Golf Tournament, a fund-raiser for the Waikoloa Recreation Association, will be played Feb. 8, at the Waikoloa Village course.

The five-person scramble will feature one Pro Bowl player per group. The cost is $150. Deadline for reservations is Wednesday. For more information, call Sharon Schultz at 808-883-8052.

Lawn bowling in the park

Five teams of lawn bowlers from Britain will take part in an international tournament starting at 1:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Lawn Bowls Club in Ala Moana Beach Park.
