campaign spending
Star-BulletinHonolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris spent $6,884 passing out "Go Bows" banners, Popsicles and watermelon at University of Hawaii football games last fall, according to his latest campaign spending commission report.
The report showed Harris has raised a total of $1,552,349 and spent $81,346. His remaining cash on hand is $1,471,003, which represents a hefty campaign war chest if his former boss Frank Fasi runs against him.
Harris raised $629,370 during the last reporting period, July 1 to Dec. 30, 1999. He received campaign contributions from a variety of architectural, construction and engineering firms, as well as from private citizens. Key members in the Harris administration also made contributions, although most of them were of minimal amounts.
Among expenses, Harris paid $12,480 to Mattson Sunderland for market research on his image, and $5,000 to McNeil Wilson Communications Inc. for media ad production. He also paid Eight Point Distributors Inc. a total of $2,573 for Popsicles for UH games. Another $144 was spent for watermelons and $4,166 for "Go Bows" banners.
Meanwhile, City Council Chairman Jon Yoshimura, who filed his report just after the 4:30 p.m. deadline Friday, showed he raised $133,689 during the entire election period so far and spent $112,040.
He reported $21,649 left. Yoshimura received a total of $76,666 in donations of less than $100 each. He also gave himself a $1,700 loan, repaying himself $1,000 of it. Yoshimura signed his name as treasurer.
The Campaign Spending Commission recently ordered Yoshimura to hire an independent CPA to review his books and explain discrepancies in his campaign finances over the past two years. A report is due Feb. 10.
