Human bones found

Technicians and police look over the site where human
remains were found at Blaisdell Park. Police said this
morning that the bones do not appear to be those of
In Chin McDonald, a woman whose handbag was
found at the park and who has been missing since
Nov.19. A man looking for driftwood found a skull
and other human bones partially buried in the mud
near the water's edge at the park, near Pearl Harbor,
yesterday. Police were notified at 4:34 p.m. The
bones appear to be "less than 50 years old," police said.

Student pilot crashes copter at Hana airport

WAILUKU -- A 37-year-old man was in Maui Memorial Hospital this morning after the helicopter he was piloting crashed at Hana Airport.

Takeo Hirai, a student pilot, was listed between guarded and satisfactory condition.

Hirai was on a three-leg journey that was to begin and end at the Keahole-Kona Airport on the Big Island, said Thomas Rea, a Federal Aviation Administration official.

Rea said Hirai had flown from Keahole Airport to Kamuela Airport, in the center of the Big Island. Authorities said he was traveling from Kamuela to Hana when he crashed about 8:30 a.m. yesterday.

Rea said the cause of the crash is under investigation.

New resident drowns in stream north of Hilo

HILO -- A man described as a newcomer to the Big Island drowned yesterday in a stream near the Onomea Scenic Route north of Hilo, police said.

He was identified as Eric Lamar Davis, 21, formerly of Detroit, Mich. Fire rescue personnel found him in 20 feet of water at Waiama Stream about 3:30 p.m., police said. An autopsy will be done.

Pupukea's Santiago won't seek re-election

State Rep. Alex Santiago (D, Pupukea) announced today he will not seek re-election this fall.

Santiago said he decided to announce early to give his Waialua-Kahuku community time to evaluate all candidates for his seat.

During his 10-year legislative career, Santiago introduced a bill that established stiff penalties for non-point source pollution.

A social worker by training, he also guided bills to recognize and license social workers.

Santiago, currently chairman of the House Health Committee, was first elected in 1990.

"It has truly been a privilege and an honor to serve the people of my community and all the people of this great state," he said.

Public will get a say on tuition hikes at UH

Meetings at which the public is invited to comment on proposed tuition increases at the University of Hawaii are scheduled this week, and will begin tomorrow on the Big Island.

The schedule:

Bullet 3-5 p.m. Wednesday, Maui Community College, Student Lounge.

Young boy shot while walking in Waianae field

Shots were fired at two young boys while they were walking in an open field in Waianae yesterday, striking one of them in the right wrist, police said.

Police are investigating the 6:50 p.m. incident on the 86-400 block of Kuwale Road as an attempted murder.

The boys, ages 9 and 12, told police that a car drove by them in the field and that the driver and passenger then got out and exchanged places. The boys then heard a "pop sound" and started running.

Maui man dies after he is hit trying to stop fight

WAILUKU -- A man who was struck after trying to stop a fight died yesterday morning at Maui Memorial Hospital without ever regaining consciousness, Maui Police Lt. Milton Matsuoka said.

Matsuoka said the incident has been classified as a homicide.

Nathan Ilar, 32, of Kihei was struck a couple of times and fell to the ground, Matsuoka said.

The alleged incident took place at 11:30 p.m. Friday night at Cove Park in Kihei.

Matsuoka said police are looking for a male suspect in his 20s who is a resident of Maui.

Second shooting suspect surrenders in Kona

KAILUA-KONA -- The second of two men wanted for shooting at a police officer turned himself in to police yesterday, they said.

The 22-year-old man surrendered at the Kona police station, they said. The man's cousin, Pedro Hanalei Barawis-Haili Jr., 20, was arrested last Thursday and charged with attempted murder, auto theft, and two firearms violations.

The two were in a stolen car Jan. 23 when one sped away from a traffic enforcement officer while the other fired at and hit the officer's car, police said.

Prison escapee captured at Laau Street address

A prison escapee on the run since October, was arrested by police early yesterday morning after a short standoff.

A neighbor called police to investigate an argument between a 36-year-old man and a woman at 3:30 a.m. yesterday at a Laau Street address, police said.

The neighbor told police the man, who escaped from the Laumaka Work Furlough Center Oct. 18, 1999, had a gun.
