Aloha's fuel bill prompts surcharge
Aloha Airlines today said it was following the lead of other airlines and imposing a fuel surcharge on its domestic flights beginning tomorrow. A $3 surcharge will be added to Aloha's one-way interisland fares and $9.30 to its one-way transpacific fares. The surcharge also will apply to Aloha's sister airline, Island Air, the company said. Travel documents bought before Saturday for travel beginning tomorrow will be unaffected. Aloha cited increased jet fuel costs, saying they have more than doubled over the past 12 months.
Banana production hit record in '99
Banana production in Hawaii hit a record 24.9 million pounds in 1999, up 18.6 percent from 21 million pounds in 1998. By year's end, however, cooler weather had slowed ripening, and production for the month of December, 1.9 million pounds, was down 9.5 percent from 2.1 million pounds in 1998. The average banana price at the farm in 1999 was 34 cents a pound, down 2.9 percent from 35 cents a pound in 1998.
Dole names exec to oversee Hawaii
A management reorganization in the North American operations of Dole Food Co. has given responsibility for Dole's Hawaii operations to Michael J. Cavallero, vice president of sales and marketing for Dole Fresh Fruit Co., North America. Dole Hawaii's businesses include fresh pineapple and tropical fruits, a fresh-cut pineapple facility, coffee, tropical flowers and Aloha Produce, a Dole-owned wholesale business. Peter M. Nolan also was promoted to president of Dole North America operations. Nolan joined Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole in 1992 and has been president of Dole Packaged Foods since 1995.
