No. 1 seed Paul Goldstein battled his way into the quarterfinals of the USTA Challenger tennis tournament, downing unseeded Lionel Roux, 6-4, 6-3, yesterday at the Hilton Waikoloa Village courts on the Big Island. Top seed advances
at WaikoloaStefano Pescosolido of Italy posted the biggest upset of the day, ousting fourth-seeded Cecil Mamiit of Los Angeles, 6-2, 6-2.
Goldstein, from Rockville, Md., was to face No. 8 seed Gaston Ellis of Argentina today.
The only other seeded player left is No. 7 Andre Sa of Brazil.
UH softball team No. 20
The University of Hawaii softball team will enter the season in a usual place - ranked in the top 25.For the seventh straight year, the Wahine are ranked in the USA Today/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Top 25 poll.
UH, which finished 35-23 in 1999 and was the runner-up at the NCAA Regional III tournament, is No. 20 in the preseason poll. Seven opponents the Wahine will face begin the year ranked ahead of them, including top-ranked UCLA and No. 2 Fresno State.
Swim win for Wahine
The Hawaii Wahine swim team improved to 15-0 with wins on the road in California yesterday. The Wahine bested San Diego State, 92-48, and Pepperdine, 110-28.
Vulcans defeat Aztecs
Kaholo Rickard pitched four scoreless innings and Hawaii-Hilo built a 7-0 lead, then held off San Diego State, 9-6, in a nonconference baseball game at Hilo's Wong Stadium last night.The Vulcans (5-3) and Aztecs (0-1) continued their four-game series with a single game tonight.
