Rates falling again for workers' comp
Workers' compensation rates are expected to drop again in Hawaii because of an agreement between the insurance industry and the state. The state Insurance Division yesterday announced that the National Council on Compensation Insurance has agreed that costs for workers' comp claims have declined 8.9 percent, the third such drop since state reforms were enacted in 1995. Insurers use the cost number to help determine rates, though the actual reductions will vary and be based on other factors as well. Since 1995, rates have fallen 40.7 percent, according to the state.

Special United Airlines fares announced today, to induce winter-bound mainlanders to travel to Hawaii, offer Hawaii residents some lower-cost travel, too.The nine-day sale, only for tickets purchased through its Internet site www.ual.com, applies to travel starting Feb. 4 through March 19 with return flights starting Feb. 6 through March 22.
Round-trip examples, before passenger facilities charges and taxes, include Honolulu-Los Angeles for $319 and Honolulu-New York for $699.
Some cheaper fares are already available, but United said that because the e-fare tickets can be bought up to seven days before travel, there are advantages for short-term buyers.
