Star-BulletinHawaii added another offensive lineman to its ranks when it received a verbal commitment yesterday from Chad Kahale of St. Louis School.
The 6-foot-2, 290-pounder is the fifth offensive linemen to say he will sign a national letter of intent with the Rainbows on Feb. 2. Verbal commitments are not binding and a scholarship can't be offered unless the student is academically eligible.
Not only does the prospective recruit have to have a minimum grade-point average and SAT score, his high school core credits must be approved by the NCAA clearinghouse before he can take part in fall camp.
Kahale is the fourth St. Louis player to verbally commit to the Rainbows, including all-everything quarterback Timmy Chang and slotback Gerald Welch. The only two former St. Louis standouts to play a significant role in Hawaii's resurgence last season were slotback Craig Stutzmann and defensive end Joe Correia.
UH head coach June Jones said last year that all of that was going to change and so far he has followed through on that promise.
The Rainbows lost out on a blue-chip offensive lineman from Irving, Texas yesterday. He had narrowed his choices to Kansas State and Hawaii, but told the Dallas Morning News he would play for the Wildcats.
Jones also unveiled his new defensive coordinator yesterday. Former San Diego Chargers assistant Kevin Lempa will be joining the Rainbows this fall. He replaces Greg McMackin, who left last month to be the associate head coach for the Texas Tech Red Raiders.
