The Hawaii Wahine have been picked to finish second behind defending champion Fresno State in this year's Western Athletic Conference softball race.

The Bulldogs received five of the six first-place votes and a total of 25 points in the poll of WAC coaches. UH, which finished third last season, got the other first-place vote and 21 points.

San Jose State was third with 14 points, followed by Loyola Marymount (13), Tulsa (10) and Portland State (7).

The Wahine play their alumnae Jan. 29 at the UH softball stadium. They open their season hosting the Feb. 10-13 Chevron Paradise Softball Classic. UCLA, Texas, Texas Tech, Long Beach State and Hofstra complete the tournament field.

Two Vulcans win WAC awards

Outfielder Brian Rooke and right-hander Kaholo Rickard of Hawaii-Hilo have been named the Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, in the Western Athletic Conference.

Rooke, a junior from Santa Monica, Calif., batted .455 (10-for-22) in four games against San Diego last week.

Rickard, a senior from Lahaina, pitched three scoreless innings to win one of those games, 3-0. He has not allowed an earned run in seven innings overall.

Hawaii third baseman Danny Kimura was among other Player of the Week nominees.

Rules of Golf workshop

The PGA of America and the United States Golf Association will conduct a Rules of Golf workshop March 6-9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Waikiki.

The program is for anyone interested in learning more about the rules, and revisions that became effective on Jan. 1.

The instructors will be Ed Hoard, PGA Rules Committee chairman, and Reed McKenzie, USGA Rules Committee chairman.
