Tapa

By Kathryn Bender, Star-Bulletin
Bob Hogue fans placed this sign along Pali Highway.

Bob’s just
bopping along

There's an orange sign on Kailua's "Christmas Tree Hill" alongside the highway. "Where Is Bob Hogue?" it demands.

Signs appear on this hill constantly. Most are indecipherable except for their fairly narrow target audience. "Snookums -- Da Back Seat Wuz Unreal! -- Babbo" means little to the rest of us, but certainly must mean something to Snookums, and Babbo was enthused enough to deliver a message for all the world to witness.

But "Where Is Bob Hogue?" is a genuine missive, an object lesson, for all of us. It's right up there with "Kilroy Was Here" in terms of making an indelible mark on our mass subconscious, a reminder that our time and placement in this universe is fleeting. Make your mark while you can. God or Fate or Corporate Perfidy or Simple Bad Luck can knock you right out of the box, pal.

As for where Bob Hogue is, he's right here. Hasn't pulled an Amelia. Here's a picture to prove it.

Hogue, for our online readers and non-TV viewers, was Joe Moore's sportscaster sidekick on the Channel 2 news for many years; a solid, comfortable, old-shoe kind of guy in a world full of big hair and pancake makeup.

Nowadays, Joe's flying solo, looking grim on a TV set that appears vaguely Klingon, and Hogue's out. Television is a harsh mistress.

"Gosh, I kinda blushed when I saw that sign," laughs Hogue. "I guess somebody out there likes me!"

Hogue is talking to TV stations and continues to host a KCCN radio show and write a column for a mass-mail tabloid that arrives in the middle of the week. So it's not as if he has vanished. Where is Bob Hogue? Still plugging away.

Now we'll figure out where Kilroy went. He was here, after all.
