Star-BulletinUniversity of Hawaii regents have approved the hiring of a full-time head coach for women's cross-country and track and field programs at the Manoa campus.
Hugh Yoshida, UH athletic director, yesterday told the regents that the women's cross-country program offers six scholarships now and uses part-time coaches.
With the addition of the indoor/outdoor track and field program, 12 more scholarships will be available for female athletes. As part of UH's gender-equity plan and Title IX requirements, the sports were designated to be filled on a full-time basis this fiscal year, he said.
The women's cross-country team will be able to compete in the Western Athletic Conference with all the schools that have full-time head coaches, he said.
Yoshida recommended a salary range between $36,876 to $62,700.
The median salary for a women's cross-country/track and field head coach is $49,787.
Yoshida said the program will start with a head coach but may later include associate and assistant coaches.
He said he hopes to have a coach by the fall season.
Yoshida told the regents that women's cross-country and track and field programs are among the most popular sports in the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I schools. All local high schools offer girls' track and field programs.
