Michael Tiknis, executive director of the Honolulu Symphony, has resigned his post of five years, effective in June.
Tiknis, credited by the symphony's board of directors for bringing the orchestra back from financial disaster to prosperity, made the announcement yesterday.
Tiknis, 48, will move to the mainland with wife, Sharon, and his son, Aaron, to care for his ailing parents. He is an only child.
Tiknis joined the symphony in 1995 after the orchestra's concert operations had been suspended two seasons due to a lack of funding. Ticket sales for the 1999-2000 season are now more than $1 million, up more than $250,000 from last season.
"It was a very difficult decision because I love Hawaii and the orchestra," said Tiknis. "I've been seeing my position as a long-term job, but the reality is that (Hawaii) is a long place away when your parents are on the mainland."
A search for his successor is expected to begin immediately.
Principal Pops conductor Matt Catingub, leader of the Copa Cat Pack, will conduct.
Here is the schedule. Shows start at 7 p.m.:
April 8 -- Wayne Newton with Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom.
May 6 -- Roberta Flack with guest B.B. Shawn.
June 2 -- Don Ho and The Legends of Hawaii.
