No press for Punahou

YOU can well understand why Hawaii-born AOL chairman Steve Case got short shrift from Newsweek. Case, after all, is now inextricably linked with its rival, Time magazine (as in Time-Warner) following the Mother of all Mergers. But even Time had little to say about Case, other than that he prefers "batik shirts" (we might refer to them as aloha shirts), that his father "was a Hawaii power-lawyer" (he no longer is???) and that "his mom taught at the school her kids attended." Newsweek said Mug shotCase is considered "boring," not necessarily a bad thing in Hawaii, and that he comes from an old-line establishment family and went to a private school where kids could go barefoot. Punahou thus ended up with zero mention, but either or both newsweeklies might have mentioned that Case has quietly given millions to his high school alma mater ... Bob Jones, for one, was reminded of the Newsweek cover story on Hawaii that said as soon as you get off the plane you can smell the bougainvillea. Said Jones, "Good smell trick." ...

IT has had a quiet opening in Waikiki, but now the nightclub claiming to be the largest and most luxurious, Zanzabar, holds its grand opening Thursday (Jan. 27) in the Waikiki Trade Center ... Jazz fans will be tickled to learn that the Academy of Arts "Na Mele o Hawai'i" is presenting a concert of Hawaiian music in a jazz style. Performing there Jan. 29 will be Rich Crandall on piano, Sam Ahia of Maui on guitar, Lyle Ritz on bass, Noel Okimoto on drums, Sango Muyiwa on percussion and vocalist Sonya Mendez. Making a cameo appearance will be Gabe Baltazar ...

A cuppa kava

NOW that the State Legislature is back in session, can stress be far from any of our minds? As in, what'll they think of next? If so, you can have an opportunity to sample nature's own stress reducer, kava. You can relax over kava in the main lobby of the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Tuesday, Jan. 25, at 3 p.m. Una Murray of the Outrigger Reef Fiji Resort will be on hand that afternoon to demonstrate the preparation of kava and discuss its cultural significance among Pacific Islanders. And yes, you can sample some. I had some homemade kava on Maui last year, and haven't felt so relaxed in years ...

MARRIAGE must be in the air. Word comes from California that longtime localite Christine Maki tied the knot Saturday with her boyfriend of many years, local developer Harry Meyer, and they'll reside in a small town there ... Kelly Dana, former manager of Havana Cabana, went back to Vermont for her mother's second marriage, met an old boyfriend she'd lost touch with, and herself will wed tomorrow on Lanikai Beach ... And Malia Louise Johnston, daughter of the founder of the Pacific Tsunami Museum in Hilo, Jeanne Branch Johnson, has a February wedding planned. The second year law student at UH will marry criminal defense attorney Birney Baxter Bervar, no relation to actress Meredith Baxter Birney ...

Not so funny valentine

IT'S never too early to start planning something special for your honey on Valentine's Day - ask any woman, and she'll tell you. You might want to book early to line up the Sweet Adelines to deliver a singing valentine to your loved one. Just tell 'em where and when.

Claudia Cannon (622-0145) handles the bookings and says it's "less calories and more fun than chocolate." ...
