A 16-year-old girl's accusations about being abused for years triggered an investigation that has led to sexual-abuse charges against Army Staff Sgt. William George Hayes II.

Hayes, 35, is accused of abusing five girls. He is assigned to the 25th Infantry Division's military police battalion at Schofield Barracks.

His wife, 34-year-old Janice Kay Hayes, is charged with covering up the offenses.

An affidavit filed Tuesday in federal court by FBI Special Agent Anthony Pickard says the 16-year-old had been sexually abused since she was 8.

The girl "related that the molestation, which included anal and oral sex, and also fondling as well as intercourse, happened against her will and that she experienced pain during such episodes of molestation," the affidavit says.

Pickard's report notes that a 14-year-old told authorities on May 7, 1997, that Hayes had repeatedly molested her since she was about 5 years old.

The Hayes family has been living in Hawaii since 1997.

Another girl, who lives in Michigan, told investigators that when she was between 6 and 11 years of age, she was sexually molested every summer by the defendant, according to the affidavit.

The girl reported the molestations to authorities after she tried to commit suicide in January 1998.

She added that Janice Hayes wrote her a letter in July 1999, urging her to "forgive and forget and to move on with her life," the affidavit says.

Two other girls, ages 17 and 19, also say they were molested. One said she was molested in 1997 and threatened to call police if Hayes did not leave her alone. The 19-year-old said she was 17 when Hayes allegedly molested her after giving her alcohol, the report says. The girl said she was molested seven times.

In January 1999, Mrs. Hayes allegedly told the mother of the victim who attempted suicide that her husband had confessed to her while "sobbing like a baby," the report says.

She is said to have apologized for the problems he had caused and said they would never happen again.
