Kern wins water
polo ‘Heisman’

UCLA water polo All-American Sean Kern, a Punahou School graduate, is the first recipient of the Peter J. Cutino Award, inaugurated this year and billed as the "Heisman Trophy of Water Polo."

Kern, chosen by coaches around the country, will receive the award at a banquet and ceremony at the Olympic Club in San Francisco Saturday night.

Kern, who led the Bruins to the NCAA water polo title, also was named NCAA Player of the Year. He is a three-time All-American.

UH swimmers sweep

The Hawaii men's and women's swimming teams won meets against Bowdoin College of Maine Monday at the Kamehameha Schools 25-meter pool, with the UH men recording world-class times in several events.

The UH men won by a score of 52-48. The Wahine beat the Lady Polar Bears, 54-46.

The Rainbows' foursome of Ramie Darling, Edward Lovell, David Jenkins and Nick Folker swam the fifth fastest 200-meter freestyle relay in the world, winning in 1 minute, 29.08 seconds.

Jenkins also won the 100 free in 48.46 seconds, eighth fastest in the world.

Lori Thomas was a double winner for the UH women, taking the 50 freestyle and 100 fly events.

Sea Warriors split pair

Scott Suraci hit a school-record four doubles as Hawaii Pacific beat Sonoma State, 17-10, in the second game of a doubleheader last night for its first victory of the baseball season.

Heath Diaz had three hits and drove in four runs, leading Sonoma State (3-3) to an 8-5 first-game victory at Hans L'Orange Park.

Hawaii Pacific is 1-3.
