Mililani, Roosevelt
OIA softball top seeds

West division winner Mililani and East champion Roosevelt are the top seeds in this week's Oahu Interscholastic Association championship softball tournament at Roosevelt.

The Trojans and Rough Riders both have byes in tomorrow's opening round, as do division runners-up Waianae (West) and Kailua (East).

Tomorrow's 1:30 p.m. opener has Castle taking on Pearl City, followed by Aiea versus Kaimuki at 3 p.m, Leilehua against Kalani at 4:30 p.m. and Kalaheo facing Campbell at 6 p.m.

Play continues through Saturday's final round that will determine the five OIA entries into the state tournament, Feb. 2-5, at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

The schedule for the OIA playoffs:

Tomorrow: Castle vs. Pearl City, 1:30 p.m.; Aiea vs. Kaimuki, 3 p.m.; Leilehua vs. Kalani, 4:30 p.m.; Kalaheo vs. Campbell, 6 p.m.

Thursday: Roosevelt vs. Castle-Pearl City winner, 1:30 p.m.; Waianae vs. Aiea-Kaimuki winner, 3 p.m.; Kailua vs. Leilehua-Kalani winner, 4:30 p.m.; Mililani vs. Kalaheo-Campbell winner, 6 p.m.

Friday: Losers bracket semifinals, 1:30 and 3 p.m.; winners bracket semifinals, 4:30 and 6 p.m.

Saturday: Fifth place, 1:30 p.m.; third place, 3 p.m.; championship, 6 p.m.

HPU upsets Fresno State

The Hawaii Pacific men's tennis team, ranked No. 5 in NCAA Division II, upset Fresno State, ranked 17th among NCAA Division I teams, 4-3, on Sunday.

Hawaii Pacific (2-2), had singles wins from Jan Tribler, Erik Sandblom, Stephan Pompulov and Kristian Nielsen to pull off the upset.

Fresno State was playing its season opener without its top player, Peter Luczak, who is No. 23 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Haugen sets record

Honolulu's Odd Haugen shattered the world record in the 800-pound "Super Yoke" race at the Aloha Tower Marketplace's waterfront Sunday.

The 1999 AFSA Strongest Man in America carried the Super Yoke a distance of 30 meters in 18.15 seconds, destroying the previous world record of 20.4 seconds set in Malta at the 1999 World Strongman Competition.

The event was a benefit for the Hawaii Chapter of Special Olympics.

Sea Warriors lose two

The Hawaii Pacific baseball team dropped both ends of its season-opening doubleheader to Sonoma State yesterday, 10-2 and 15-12, at Hans L'Orange Park.

Johnny Pham had six hits and drove in seven runs in the doubleheader sweep for the Cossacks (2-2).

Scott Suraci had four hits for the Sea Warriors in the two games.

Seasider sweeps

The BYU-Hawaii men's and women's tennis teams opened their seasons yesterday with sweeps over UH-Hilo.

The defending national champion Seasider women breezed past the Vulcans with three women - Petra Gaspar, Tagitano So'onalole and Tomoko Sukegawa - scoring 6-0 victories over their opponents.

The Seasider men were led by No. 1 singles player Toshi Matsui, who beat Hilo's Daguda Ndiaye, 6-3, 6-2.
