Key hole

No. 1 Star Par 4 Star 488 yards

This hole was originally designed in 1927 by Seth Raynor. He wanted it to compare with the famous Road Hole of the St. Andrews course in Scotland. A new forward tee was built last year on the left so that this former par-5 hole will now play as a lengthy par-4.

Depending on the wind, the second shot to a very shallow green can be played with anything from a 3-wood to a 9-iron. The green is guarded by a deep bunker that Waialae Course designer Rich Smith believes makes this hole difficult no matter which way the wind blows.

"We moved the fairway bunker left and the tee way left, so this is a long hole," Smith said. "It plays about 490, so it's a challenge, even for these guys out here.

"The green is definitely going to be more receptive to a bump-and-run front. This green accepts shots better relative to the trajectory and length. The fairway bunker right is just a perception thing. It's more for the members, who still play this hole as a par-5.''

Low scores over the years forced Waialae to make these adjustments. After John Huston shot a 28-under to win in 1998, two par-5s were changed to par-4s. Par now is 70 rather than 72.

"The course still plays basically the same way,'' Huston said. "If the winds lay low, anybody can still shoot a great number on this course. It's more of a mental thing now.''

Hardest hole

No. 13 Star Par 4 Star 478 yards

This is the second hole to be changed from a par-5 to a par-4 and it certainly played tough yesterday. There were more bogeys on this hole than any other on the course. Not only was it the most difficult hole during the second round, it is the hardest hole overall as well.

Average score -- 4.337
Eagles -- 0
Birdies -- 9
Pars -- 78
Bogeys -- 54
Double bogeys -- 3

Best hole

No. 18 Star Par 5 Star 551yards

So far this week, if you don't get a birdie on the finishing hole at Waialae, you have lost a stroke to the rest of the field. For the second consecutive day, the pros shot lights-out at the 18th. There weren't as many eagles as Thursday, but still plenty of birdies to go around.

Average score -- 4.403
Eagles -- 4
Birdies -- 83
Pars -- 52
Bogeys -- 5
Double bogeys -- 0
