Kaholo Rickard and three Hawaii-Hilo relievers combined to pitch a three-hitter as the Vulcans opened their baseball season with a 4-0 victory over Sonoma (Calif.) State last night at Wong Stadium in Hilo. Vulcans open with
4-0 victoryShortstop Brandon Chaves homered and singled for the Vulcans, who will join the Hawaii Rainbows in the Western Athletic Conference baseball ranks this year.
Rickard allowed two hits over the first four innings to earn the victory. Joe Bell, Chad Agustin and Ben Siff finished up the shutout.
Third baseman Billy Rayl also had a pair of hits for UH-Hilo.
The teams played again today.
Ah-Kiong loses decision
Hawaii's Tuese Ah-Kiong lost a 9-5 decision to Flapping Eagle of Boise, Idaho, in the superheavyweight semifinals of the 2000 Everlast U.S. Boxing Championships yesterday at Colorado Springs, Colo. U.S. Championships.
Iron Team Challenge
Entries are being accepted for the Bud Light Iron Team Challenge, a four-day multi-sport competition to be held Feb. 10-13.A minimum of six and max of eight teams each will play seven softball games, seven doubles tennis matches, at least four sand volleyball games and the Coach's Dart Challenge.
The first-place team will receive a perpetual team trophy, 10 inter-island round-trip air fares and T-shirts.
The entrance fee is $350. The first eight teams to pay are in.
