Mustangs trample Wahine
WAHINE PLAYBOOK
Star-Bulletin staffThe Hawaii Wahine were almost perfect at one end of the floor, but made too many bad decisions at the other end.
The Southern Methodist Mustangs hoisted their 1998-99 Western Athletic Conference championship banner to the Moody Coliseum rafters before the game, then opened their conference season by defeating Hawaii for the first time in six tries.
The Wahine scored just four points in the final 5:08 as SMU broke open a tight contest with an 18-4 run en route to a 68-51 win.
"We did not play with a lot of composure. Not everyone, but enough people on the floor did not make good decisions, didn't execute," Hawaii head coach Vince Goo said in a telephone interview from Dallas.
The Wahine attacked the Mustangs' man defense with a power game. Hawaii had success inside, shooting 57 percent from the field in the first half.
The Wahine led the whole first half, but probably should have built more than a 25-23 lead at the intermission. They were guilty of 14 turnovers, many unforced, which kept them from taking advantage of SMU's 35 percent shooting.
One sequence late in the first half had the Wahine throwing the ball away three times and taking a horrible shot in four consecutive trips down the floor.
"The second half came down to both teams playing very aggressively and very hard," Goo said. "There was a lot of pushing, hacking, bodies all over the floor. It became very physical and it was out of control."
At one point UH's leading scorer with 17 points, Raylene Howard, was knocked under the scorer's table.
Neither team scored for the first three minutes of the second half, then it was back and forth until 5:08 remained.
Nici Johnson made two free throws, Karlin Kennedy scored on a layup and Johnson came back with a 3-pointer. Suddenly Hawaii was down, 57-47.
The Wahine tried to catch up with 3-pointers, but were 0-for-9 in the game. It's the first time they had been shutout from beyond the arc this season.
Dainora Puida scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds for UH.

At Texas Christian Horned Frogs
Season records: Hawaii (1-1 WAC, 9-5 overall), Texas Christian (1-0 WAC, 10-7 overall).
Series record: Hawaii leads the series, 3-0. In the last meeting, Feb. 12, 1998, the Wahine won, 74-52, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Top players: Texas Christian, senior guard Diamond Jackson (13,4 points, 4.1 rebounds a game), sophomore guard Tricia Payne (12.2 ppg), junior guard Amy Sutton (11.4 ppg, 4.1 assists a game), junior guard Jill Sutton (9.4 ppg) ... Hawaii, senior guard Raylene Howard (17.7 ppg, 6.9 rpg); junior forward Kylie Galloway (14.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg); senior guard Kyla Evers (10.0 ppg, 4.2 apg, 2.3 steals a game), junior center Dainora Puida (9.9 ppg, 6.3 rpg); senior forward Hedy Liu (7.3 ppg, 6.1 rpg).
Interesting facts: The Horned Frogs experienced their first winning season (16-12) at the NCAA Division I level a year ago. TCU has compiled a 23-9 (.719) record in November and December the past three seasons, but is just 19-32 (.373) in January, February and March during that same span. The Horned Frogs are tied for 11th in the nation in 3-point shots made per game (7.6) ... Jeff Mittie is in his first season at TCU following three seasons at Missouri Western and four at Arkansas State (his Lady Indians lost to UH in the 1997 Hawaii Invitational). ... Hawaii's only previous trip to Fort Worth, Texas, resulted in a 82-79 overtime victory, Jan. 17, 1998.
Game keys: The Wahine should be able to go inside on offense against the Horned Frogs. This means keeping their composure on offense and making good decisions, their downfall against SMU ... Hawaii will have to stop Texas Christian's long-range game and that means tight defense on the Sutton twins, junior guards Amy and Jill. They don't need much room to get a shot off, but don't like body-to-body pressure ... Another guard, Tricia Payne, who disappeared from the TCU offense last season, is back and dangerous and has a knack of getting to the free-throw line. She is a lot like UH's Raylene Howard, not fast, not big, but does it all and can score. Forward Diamond Jackson is a feast or famine shooter.
Tipoff: Tomorrow, 3 p.m., Daniel-Meyer Coliseum, Fort Worth, Texas.
