Matson seeking Jones Act exception
Matson Navigation Co. has asked the U.S. Maritime Administration for a Jones Act exemption so it can take two ships intended for foreign trade and put them into West Coast-Hawaii service with a stop in Canada. The Jones Act, which keeps foreign ships out of the U.S. domestic trade, also forbids ships built with a federal subsidy from carrying cargo between U.S. ports.
Matson said today it believes it should be allowed to use the subsidy-built ships, taken from its joint operation with APL Ltd. on the West Coast-Guam-Asia route, in the new service because they will make a foreign stop in Canada.
