Mighty Mo benefit
set for Jan. 28

The Hawaii Newspaper Agency's Battleship Missouri Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Jan. 28 at the Pearl Country Club, with a gala awards dinner to follow aboard Mighty Mo.

Money raised will be used for the ongoing restoration and education programs of the Battleship Missouri Memorial.

The event will unfold on the eve of the first anniversary of the grand opening of the memorial and 56th anniversary of the ship's launching.

Official sponsors are HNA, Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, and American Airlines.

The pro/am golf tournament will start at 7 a.m. The evening awards dinner, to follow a tour of the ship, will feature a 1940s-style USO Show with top local entertainers, and a live auction.

Hollywood celebrities Robert Stack, Samuel L. Jackson, Loni Anderson and Tippi Hedren will participate.

Team sponsorships for the golf tournament, which include preferred seating for tables of 10 at the dinner-show, cost $8,000, $6,000 and $5,000. Individual golf sponsorships are $500 and include two seats for the dinner-show. Tickets for the dinner-show only cost $250 apiece.

'Unsung hero' Martin honored

Glenn Martin of Kaneohe, one of 10 finalists for one of three national Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association Heroes Awards, received his State of Hawaii SGMA Hero award and a proclamation from Honolulu Mayor Jeremy Harris yesterday at Honolulu Hale.

Martin was singled out by SGMA for his dedication and hard work with various community leagues over the last 20 years.

The SGMA Heroes program recognizes and rewards "unsung heroes" of sport within local communities across the country.

Agbayani fest at NikeTown

NikeTown will host a homecoming celebration for New York Mets outfielder Benny Agbayani at 3 p.m. Jan. 22 at its Waikiki location, 2080 Kalakaua Ave.

The former St. Louis School and Hawaii Pacific University athlete will be joined by some of the people who influenced him the most as a youngster growing up and playing baseball in Hawaii. The HPU cheer squad also will be on hand and keiki can have free collectible photos taken with Agbayani.

There will be drawings for Nike bats and bat bags and each of the first 150 arrivals will receive a free limited edition of NikeTown "Benny Just Did It" baseball pennant.

Parking is $1 an hour with Hawaii ID at King Kalakaua Plaza.

Drag racing season opener

The 2000 drag racing season officially kicks off this weekend at Hawaii Raceway Park with the Goodyear Tire dealers' Street Racing Season Opener on Saturday night.

The track will open at 6 p.m. for all racers who wish to run their cars, motorcycles or trucks on the quarter-mile drag strip. There are no classes or entry fees beyond the $6 admission. Any licensed driver with a safe vehicle is invited to race.

Hawaii's Goodyear Tire stores will award $100 gift certificates every hour until the track closes at midnight. The drawings will be from admission ticket numbers, so all racers and fans will have a chance at winning.
