Four qualify for Sony Open

Kevin Hayashi of Hilo and three mainland golf pros won the last four exempt spots in this week's Sony Open in Hawaii, topping a field of 78 in qualifying play yesterday at the Pearl Country Club.

Hayashi shot a 67, as did Steve Jurgensen of Newport Beach, Calif., and PGA Tour member Keith Clearwater of Orem, Utah. Aaron Meeks of Las Vegas, Nev., earned the fourth spot by beating John Douma in a playoff after each shot 69.

Also, touring pro Robert Gamez was added to the 144-player field, replacing Russ Cochran, who withdrew.

Four previous exempt spots were claimed by local golfers. David Ishii and Tommy Hines (member qualifying), Parker McLachlin (amateur qualifying) and Greg Meyer (Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year).

The Sony Open in Hawaii runs from Thursday through Sunday at the Waialae Country Club.

UH cheerleaders finish eighth in national meet

Hawaii finished eighth last weekend in the Universal Cheerleaders Association National Collegiate Cheerleading Championship at Orlando, Fla.

UH was one of 19 Division I-A cheerleading teams competing.

First place went to Kentucky, second to Alabama and third to North Carolina State.

UH team members are co-captains Vanessa Napoleon and Jamey Gossett, Joslin DeDiego, Robynne Kamidoi, Tina Kuribayashi, Kellie Mikami, Rae-Ann Ogino, Ludia Park, Lupe Davis, Ric Graham, Curtis Johnson, Kaimana Ka 'apana, Lathe Lavada, Lance Neely, Bo Ng and Jonathan Young.

Their coach is Heidi Deininger. Her assistants are Erika Buder and Brian Yi.

Hannie Anderson elected president of OHCRA

Former paddling coach and Na Wahine O Ke Kai race director Hannie Anderson was elected president of the Oahu Hawaiian Canoe Racing Association at its annual meeting last weekend.

Anderson succeeds Joan Malama, who presided over OHCRA for 14 years, as head of the 15-club association.

Other elected officers were Sharon Nascua, first vice president; Walter Guild, second vice president; Curtins Hawkins, third vice president; Shirley Kalama, treasurer, and Mina Danielson, race director.
