By Ken Ige, Star-Bulletin
Thomas Ky has just opened his
fourth Assaggio restaurant.

New Assaggio opens
in Ala Moana Center

Two floors up, Alan Wong had just opened the Pineapple Room with great fanfare and a publicity blitz. Meanwhile, at the bottom of the escalator, near the fountain and the fishpond in the old Byron II location, Thomas Ky quietly opened his fourth Assaggio restaurant.

He's been serving up his Italian meals to a steady crowd at Ala Moana Center since Dec. 16, after a $1 million renovation.

The 7,000-square-foot restaurant seats 175 in the dining room, bar and two private rooms and is the largest in the chain. It is also the first Assaggio to open in town. Ky's other restaurants have been in suburbia -- in Kailua, Hawaii Kai and Mililani. He and his partners also own Paesano in Manoa and Bua Khao, a Thai place in Hawaii Kai.

Ky says he hopes to bring in many regulars from his other restaurants who work in town. The menu is almost identical to the other Assaggios, and Ky says he is keeping the prices the same as well -- no Ala Moana premium.

Assaggio Ala Moana is on the bottom level, makai side of the mall on the Liberty House end. Hours are 10:30 a.m.-9:30 p.m. Sundays-Thursdays; 10:30 a.m.-10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays. Call 942-3446.

Aloha shirt subject of talk

The Aloha Shirt is recognized all around the world today, and in her new book, "Aloha Attire: Hawaiian Dress in the Twentieth Century," author Linda B. Arthur describes the history of a local industry which made an impact on contemporary fashion.

Arthur will give a free talk at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19 at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The talk will be held in the Krauss Hall Yukiyoshi Room.

Arthur, an associate professor of textiles and clothing, and curator of the Ethnic Costume Collection at the UH, studies the intersection of culture, gender and ethnicity in dress. She will talk about research for her book and show some historically relevant examples of aloha attire at the event.

Copies of her book will be available at the talk. For more information, call 956-3836.
