The Waikiki Aquarium's new 34-page souvenir book, "Hawaii's Window on the Sea," is a colorful primer for those with an interest in the ocean.

book The aquarium is home to more than 2,500 marine animals, and the book highlights some of the aquarium's exhibits and research.

Written and edited by aquarium director Bruce Carlson and education director Dr. Carol Hopper, and designed by Island Heritage Press, the book makes an excellent resource for school children. More than 120 photographs offer glimpses of living corals, reef fishes, sharks and species illustrated for the first time anywhere, including a rare new species of Hawaiian butterflyfish.

As a souvenir, the book opens with a look at the institution's 95-year history before allowing readers to dive in for a peek at creatures under water. The Waikiki Aquarium is administered by the University of Hawai'i and is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States.
