Meyer beats Ishii,
Wilson by one shot
in Hilo golf

Gregory Meyer shot a 3-under-par 68 in yesterday's final round to edge David Ishii and Dean Wilson by one stroke for the 2000 Sears Invitational golf tournament title.

Meyer had a 36-hole total of 136 to top the professional field. Ishii, who shot a par 71 yesterday on the Hilo Municipal course, and Wilson, who finished with a 2-under 69, had 137 totals.

Creighton Aotani shot a 66 - the best final-round score - to tie Ken Tanigawa (71) for fifth place among the pros at 139.

Amateur honors went to Michael Ukauka, who finished at 139, six strokes ahead of runners-up Casey Watabu, Brandan Kop, Laine Malson and Van Wright.

Young Yamauchi brothers set state weightlifting marks

Brothers Kyle and Bryce Yamauchi set state records in their respective 103 and 123 boys' bodyweight classes during the Honolulu Open Weightlifting Championships at the Nuuanu YMCA Saturday.

Kyle Yamauchi, 16, hoisted a total of 424 pounds in his two lifts, bettering the old state record by 38 pounds. His 198-pound snatch and 226-pound jerk also set state marks.

Bryce Yamauchi, 14, had a state-record snatch of 143 pounds in the 103 B class.

The brothers are coached by their father, John Yamauchi, a former national champion lifter.

Other class winners were Chani Matsui (94 girls), Kristel Ajifu (106 girls), Nicola Nakama (128 women), Brandon Ueki (123 junior men), Wayne Oyafuso (136 Masters over 70), Mike Harada (187 masters over 40), Kris Kimura (187 men) and Kenji Matsuda (207 men).

Three more victories in Florida for UH swimmers

David Jenkins set a meet record in the 100-meter freestyle and fellow University Hawaii swimmers Angus Macdonald and Sarah Watchorn won their sprint events as the Rainbow men and women capped a strong meet-long showing in the College Swim Coaches Championships yesterday at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Jenkins and teammate Nick Folker were 1-2 in the men's 100, Jenkins setting a meet mark of 50.98 seconds and Folker finishing in 51:11.

Macdonald won the men's 400 freestyle in 4 minutes, 6.88 seconds and UH's Anders Jonsson was second in 4:14.32.

Watchorn and teammate Lori Thomas were 1-2 in the women's 100 free, in 58:35 and 58.99, respectively.

Sanja du Plessis of UH was second to Boston U.'s Lisa Barton in the women's 400 free final with a 4:30.44 clocking.

Four records fall at Kalani Invitational swimming meet

Four meet records were set over the weekend at the Kalani Invitational, the first major high school swim competition of the year.

Baldwin senior Cheyne Bloch broke his own year-old record in the 100 breast, lowering the time to 56.80 seconds from 58.21. He also anchored the Bears' two record-setting relay teams in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle.

Iolani freshman Hong Zhe Sun broke a long-standing mark in the 100 back, dropping it to 52.63 from from 54.19.
