Punahou, Maryknoll win
overtime thrillers

Richard Kim sank two free throws with 11 seconds left in overtime to give Punahou a 51-50 victory over Kamehameha last night in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu boys' basketball season opener at the Buffanblu gym.

Kolo Kapanui was a major force for the Warriors with 28 points.

But four 3-point shots in the last 90 seconds of regulation play enabled Punahou to wipe out an 11-point Kamehameha lead and send the game into OT.

Ryan Saito hit three treys before David Cowen buried another with 10 seconds to play, tying the game at 44. They were Punahou's only 3-pointers in the game.

Saito had 13 points for the Buffanblu.

Russell Sypowicz scored eight points in the third overtime period as the Spartans beat the Junior Rainbows in an ILH game.

Maryknoll got 39 points from Kenny Lindsay, who fouled out during the second overtime period. Sypowicz took over, finishing with 19 points.

Casey Kushiyama scored 24 points for University High.

Brandon Ross pumped in 26 points for Kalani, which led by three after three quarters but couldn't hold off the Faimealelei-led Bulldogs.

Ryan Santos led the Trojans with 10 points.

Asinsin drained two of his three 3-pointers and one free throw during the overtime period. Kapena Keopuhiwa added 10 points for Nanakuli.

Christian Luke had 12 points and Courtney Schirmer 10 for the Chargers.
