Kamehameha’s Crabbe
named player of year

Senior setter Uila Crabbe, who led Kamehameha to an undefeated season and a No. 1 national ranking, was named the Gatorade Player of the Year for girls' volleyball in Hawaii.

Crabbe, the ILH Player of the Year, is now eligible for national player of the year honors. She will walk-on this fall at Brigham Young.

The Warriors won a third straight state title in November with their 58th consecutive victory.

Kim Willoughby, who has verbally committed to play for Hawaii next season, was the Player of the Year selection from Louisiana for the second year in a row. The 5-11 outside hitter attends Assumption High in Napoleonville, La.

QB Club guest speakers

Long-time University of Hawaii baseball coach Les Murakami, UH softball coach Bob Coolen and Kamehameha Schools boys' basketball coach Jim Winchester will speak at Monday's Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon, which starts at 11:30 a.m. at the Pagoda Hotel.

USTA Challenger at Waikoloa

Sargis Sargsian, the 1995 NCAA singles champion, headlines the field for the Hilton Waikoloa Village USTA Challenger event Jan. 23-30.

The only ATP Tour-affiliated tennis tournament in Hawaii will include 24 players who are not competing at the Australian Open, four wild cards and four from the 32-player qualifying draw.

The tickets are complementary for the Jan. 23-24 qualifying rounds and range from $5-$15 the rest of the tournament.

Boating classes start

The Honolulu Power Squadron is offering a seven-session evening course in safe boating beginning Jan. 17 at the Waikiki Yacht Club.

The course is designed for skippers and aspiring skippers, and is open to adults and teen-agers. For more information, call 846-9000.

Ala Wai Challenge deadline

Monday is the entry deadline for teams in the 15th Ala Wai Challenge on Jan. 23.

The fund-raiser for the Waikiki Community Center includes a quarter-mile outrigger canoe race along the Ala Wai Canal and ancient Hawaiian games.

The fee is $360 for a team of 12, including T-shirts and refreshments. The event begins at 9 a.m.

This year's challenge will honor legendary steersman Nappy Napoleon, who has competed in the Molokai Hoe every year since 1958.

Aloha Gymfest on tap

More than 200 female gymnasts from Hawaii, the U.S. mainland, Canada, Japan, Australia and New Zealand will compete in the 24th Aloha Gymfest, Jan. 14-16, at Kailua High School.

Competition for levels 4-10 begins Jan 14 at 6 p.m. and continues the next two days with sessions running from 8:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are available at the door for $4-$8.
