King Jr. holiday
The celebration includes a

parade, art exhibit and musicA parade and rally in Waikiki on Jan. 17 will highlight more than a week of special events to mark the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.
The parade will start at 9 a.m. at Magic Island and go to Kapiolani Park where an 11 a.m. unity rally takes place.
This 12th-annual King Holiday Celebration is being organized by the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition and the City and County of Honolulu.
Included in the observances:
An invitational reception at 5 p.m. on Tuesday at Washington Place, co-sponsored by the Hawaii Civil Rights Commission, Equal Opportunity Commission, National Weather Service and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and University of Hawaii Student Equity.
"A Civil Rights Symposium" will be held Thursday in the Hawaii Supreme Court Courtroom at 417 S. King St. It will run from 9:30 a.m. to noon and is sponsored by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and Hawaii Civil Rights Commission.
Also on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., the National Weather Service Pacific Region Headquarters, together with the Civil Rights Commission, will host the annual King Holiday Program at Grosvenor Center Plaza at 737 Bishop St.
At 7 p.m. next Friday, the African-American Association of Hawaii will hold the King Holiday Dinner in the Pacific Ballroom of the Ilikai Hotel.
At 7 p.m. on Jan. 15, the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Coalition and City and County will host an art exhibit awards ceremony, evening of theater and reception at City Hall, where the art exhibit will remain open until Feb. 12.
At 1 p.m. on Jan. 16, Channel 5 will broadcast "The Life and Impact of MLK." Also on Sunday at City Hall, a 7 p.m. candlelight bell-ringing ceremony will take place with the ringing of the Nagasaki Peace Bell.
Public access channels statewide will air "Who Killed Martin Luther King" the night of Jan. 17. Check community access Web sites for times. At 4 p.m. that day, "The Queen and Dr. King" will be heard on Hawaii Public Radio's KIPO (FM 89.3) and KIFO (AM 1380).
"And Now Viva Panama," an evening of music and dance, prose and poetry, will held at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 19 at the University of Hawaii-Manoa's Center for Hawaiian Studies. The sponsors are UH's Center for Hawaiian Studies, the Spanish division of the European Language Department, and the departments of political science and ethnic studies.
A movie, "Martin Luther King, Amazing Grace," will be shown at 6 p.m. on Jan. 21 at a Plaza Club dinner on the 20th floor of Pioneer Plaza at 900 Fort Street Mall.
