Govs squeeze past
Red Raiders in OIA East
basketball thriller

Nalo Cabuyaban's putback with 10 seconds remaining carried visiting Farrington to a 53-51 victory over Kahuku in the boys' basketball season opener for both OIA East teams.

Farrington led, 33-20, at the half, but Kahuku rallied to take the lead midway through the final quarter. The Red Raiders were ahead, 51-50, when Cabuyaban scored the last of his game-high 19 points to give the Govs a 52-51 lead.

Kahuku lost the inbounds pass and Brandon Passas hit one free throw to close out the scoring.

The Red Raiders' Aaron Francisco led all scorers with 24 points.

Kenneth Gasilas added 11 for Farrington.

At Waipahu, the Chargers scored their last eight points from the free-throw line to outlast the Marauders in an OIA West opener.

Terry Ayers, who finished with 18 points, hit four free throws and Miguel Parks, who had a team-high 20 points, made three as the Chargers outscored the Marauders, 10-5, in OT.

Eugene Adduro had 21 points for Waipahu, which made up an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter to tie it at 45.

Rommel Duquez added 14 for Waipahu.

At Roosevelt, sophomore guard Keola Stietzel scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as the Rough Riders pulled away from the Cougars in their season opener.

Stietzel had all three of Roosevelt's 3-pointers. Evan Dorsey added 14 points for the Rough Riders, who broke away from a 27-22 halftime lead with a 36-20 run in the second half.

Jason Peters hit three 3-pointers and led Kaiser with 15 points. Ben Suiso had 10 points or the Cougars.

At Radford, Jacob Avilla scored 21 points and Isaac Dunklee added 18 as the Rams defeated Na Alii in the OIA West opener for both teams.

Avilla hit two of his three 3-pointers in the first quarter as Radford jumped out to a 24-14 lead and never looked back. Avilla also hit all 10 of his free throws and the Rams finished 24 of 30 from the line.

Jon Mosqueda led Aiea with 11 points. Daniel Poyer had 10 for Na Alii.
