Sears Hilo golf titleHayashi, the head pro at the Hilo course, shot a sizzling first round 64 last year en route to the victory. He went on to also win the Callaway Hawaii State Open and the EZGO Head Pro/Assistant Pro Championships.
This year's field includes some of the best pro and amateur golfers in the state. David Ishii heads the list of pros who will vie for a share of the $15,000 purse.
Others entered are Greg Meyer, the defending Aloha Section PGA Player of the Year; senior PGA tour player Steve Veriato, and Asian tour player Dean Wilson.
The event opens Friday with the pro-am tournament starting at 10:30 a.m. A long drive demonstration and clinic at 4:30 p.m. on the first tee. The clinic, hosted by Ishii, is open to the public at no charge.
Saturday's shotgun start rounds are at 7 a.m. and noon. Sunday's final round has 7 a.m. starts on the first and 10th tees.
2000 Maui Marathon closed to new entries
The 2000 Maui Marathon has reached its maximum number of 2,500 entries for the March 19 run and is no longer accepting applications.More than 2,700 entries were received as of Dec. 29, a 31 percent increase over last year's record field of 2,055 runners.
Applications are still being accepted for the companion Maui Tacos 5K Fun Run/Walk. Applications are available in the Hawaii Race magazine, at Maui Tacos locations or by calling the Valley Isle Road Runners at 871-6441 (Maui).

UH looks for members of '50 baseball team
The University of Hawaii athletic department is trying to reach all members of the 1950 Rainbow baseball team for a reunion Jan. 15, when UH plays the annual alumni doubleheader at Rainbow Stadium.Members of the 1950 team should call Eddie Inouye at 956-4531 for further information.
