Police are searching for a suspect who allegedly hit a police officer with a stolen car yesterday during a traffic stop along the H-3 freeway.

Motorcycle officer Mason Kuaiwa pulled over a speeding Honda four-door sedan traveling Kaneohe-bound near the H-3 tunnels at 2:53 p.m., police said.

The suspect came to a stop, then backed into Kuaiwa, police said. As the officer got to his feet, he saw the Honda's reverse lights were still on. The officer fired two shots from his service pistol, and the car sped away, according to a police report.

The 1991 light brown Honda was later recovered in Aikahi and found to be an unreported stolen vehicle. Kuaiwa, 33, was taken to Queen's Hospital with a possible fractured left wrist and was treated and released.

Police have classified the case as first-degree attempted murder and auto theft. No suspect description was available.
