Question: Are deputy sheriffs who patrol Honolulu Airport permitted to set up speed traps on Lagoon Drive and on Aolele Street? I've seen them sitting on the side of the road and pulling people over. I did not see any radar guns. I know they have the contract for airport security, but can they pull people over for speeding? Airport in deputies
jurisdictionAnswer: Yes, they can, said Ted Sakai, director of the state Department of Public Safety.
They have the same traffic enforcement powers as the Honolulu Police Department on Lagoon Drive, Aolele Street and other streets surrounding the airport.
The Sheriff's Division took over the function of police at Honolulu Airport a month ago, on Nov. 15, and are required to enforce county, state and federal laws in the airport area, Sakai said.
In fact, they have been monitoring traffic in response to a request from airport officials because of numerous complaints, he said.
"Speeding in the area has been an ongoing problem for a while now, and from time to time there will be deputies assigned to monitor the problem," Sakai said.
During the last week of November and the first week of December, warnings were given to a majority of the drivers stopped, with citations issued to those who were traveling "well over the speed limit," he said.
FYI: Sakai explained that AKAL Security has the new airport security contract, replacing Wackenhut Security. Sheriffs replaced HPD officers who had been assigned to the airport.
Sheriffs are full-time, sworn law enforcement officers who have the same powers as police officers.

Auwe
To whoever stole three packages that I planned to mail to California, Australia and India. On Dec. 9, I parked my car near the Nuuanu post office. After parking, I noticed that I had forgotten to hang my handicapped parking placard, so I left the packages, in a bag, near the car on the sidewalk. It didn't take half a minute to hang the placard, but when I went to retrieve the packages, they were gone. I looked up and down Nuuanu Avenue, but didn't see anyone with my bag. Don't you have a guilty conscience? I hope you at least have a big tummy ache for consuming the contents of the packages and I hope that what you did comes back to you real soon. -- No name

To the kind person who turned in my husband's keys with the orange snap ring to Honolulu Airport security. May you be rewarded with all the good things in life. -- Loretta
